Best Kitchen Torch Reviews 2019: Top 5+ Recommended

I've always loved making crème brûlée. My family adores eating it, but I could never make the glossy, crispy crust.

John and the boys never complained about it, but I've noticed that they enjoy it more when my friend Amanda makes it.

After deciding to ask her for advice on making it, I found out that she has been using a culinary torch.

Immediately, I decided to buy one.

Ever since I have been trying different torches for crème brûlée, on a mission to find the best kitchen torch money can buy.

What Is A Kitchen Torch?

A kitchen torch is a tool that uses butane, a flammable gas.

The most common use of it is for the crust of a crème brûlée, but it is also used for indoor toasting marshmallows, making brown meringue, or for making the topping on mac and cheese brown and many others.

How To Choose An Ideal Torch

There are many factors that you should look into when choosing a gas torch. They are all different in many ways, can have different attributes.

I would like to discuss some of the most important factors and the things that you should look for when searching for a torch that is perfect for you.

1. Is The Kitchen Torch Easy To Use?

As someone who has a lot of experience in the kitchen, I have to say that products that aren't complicated are way better.

If something isn't easy to use, you will just waste your time on trying to figure out how it works, or on unnecessary complications that come along the way.

These are the two reasons why I believe that a kitchen torch should be easy to use.

2. Effectiveness

The torch should be fast and effective, and that means that it should reach the minimum temperature of 2500 degrees Fahrenheit.

If it is lower than that, the flame won't be even near enough to make the top of a crème brûlée crispy as it should be.

I've tried a lot of torches, but most of them just weren't as effective as they needed to be and using them while cooking simply didn't produce good results.

3. Comfort

There are many variations when it comes to the handle of the culinary torch. Most of them are comfortable to hold, but there are some that will really make you regret buying them.

That is why I recommend getting a torch that has rubber grips on the handle.

Some torches even have a tabletop stand, which means that you can use them hands-free, and for some people that might be the best option.

4. Gas Flow Adjustment

You should be able to adjust the size of the flame so that it suits what you're making. In my opinion, a gas flow adjustment lever is something that every torch should have.

The flame is supposed to be narrow, dark blue and short.

If the flame is too big, that means that it's not as safe. Trust me.

5. Child Safety

The kitchen torch should meet Child Safety Requirements and have a safety lock. Even if you do not have small children, you never know when your friends and their playful kids will come over.

And we all know kids, they would play with anything. So remember to find a torch that has this feature.

6. The Neck

Your blowtorch should have a long anti-flare neck; it is important that the flame is precise and that it will work from any angle.

If it isn't, you will have to go through a lot of unnecessary trouble in order to do something that is supposed to be really simple.

7. MAPP Gas Vs. Propane

The MAPP gas burns the hottest, and that is around 3650 degrees Fahrenheit. Propane isn't as hot as MAPP gas, but it is more common to use.

Propane is more available – you can find it almost anywhere.

MAPP gas is also far more expensive, which is a significant disadvantage.

MAPP gas can burn too hot, so I am not a big fan of using it. That is why my choice of gas for my torch is propane.

The first butane torch for cooking that I have used in my kitchen is LiBa Culinary Torch. As for looks, it is a really simple, silver torch, measuring 4.5 x 6 x 2 inches. It is made from stainless steel, and it was built to last.

This food torch is really simple to use. The first thing you need to do is fill up the tank with butane. After that, turn on the safety lock and the gas.

Don't forget to turn the blow torch away from other objects before igniting. You will be able to control the flame strength by turning the gas knob. It is able to burn up to 60 minutes, and it has a safety lock.

The weight of this product is 11 ounces, which is a bit heavier than it should be. 11 ounces isn't something that you might call heavy, but after using it for a bit longer, you'll see what I mean.

Even though the flame is not precise, this butane torch can reach the temperature of 2730 degrees Fahrenheit, which might not be the highest temperature for this type of product, but it is high enough to get the job done.

The LiBa torch has a three-year warranty, and 90 days money back guarantee or replace the product with no questions asked.

Things I liked

  • Safety lock
  • Simple to use
  • Stainless steel
  • Able to burn up to 60 minutes
  • Has a fuel gauge window
  • Works from any angle

Things I didn't like

  • Doesn't have a rubber grip on the handle
  • Heavy

The dimensions of this torch are 5.1 x 3 x 7 inches, and it is made from high-quality materials, guaranteed to last longer than most kitchen torches. The color of this little torch is white/silver.

This mini blow torch weighs 8 ounces, which I find pretty amazing. The JB Chef Micro Butane Torch is surprisingly easy to use and comfortable to hold, it even has its own base to stand on. While standing, it can be filled in just a few seconds with lighter butane gas.

This small torch might be a bit more expensive than the others, but I can assure you that you will not regret spending a few extra dollars on this amazing product. I can easily say that it delivers enough value for the money.

The flame might not be as precise as it should be, but this cute little torch has really high burning, you will be able to use it for other things besides cooking, per example soldering, jewelry making, and even welding.

You will be able to control the flame with this product to adjust it to whatever you're cooking at the time, and it has a locking mechanism that will make it safer.

Things I liked

  • Small
  • Easy to use
  • Doesn't weigh much
  • Value for money
  • High burning
  • Adjustable flame
  • Safe to use
  • Has its own base
  • Comfortable to hold
  • Great customer service

Things I didn't like

  • Sometimes, you might have trouble filling it with gas

The dimensions of this product are, shockingly, 1 x 1 x 0.1 inches, and it has Amazon's 30-day return policy. As you can notice, it is really tiny. But even though it is undeniably small, the flame is great enough for you to use it just like you would use any other kitchen torch, but it isn't as easy to use as it should be.

The weight of this product is 7.2 ounces, which is pretty light, but considering the size of this torch, I think that it could've been lighter.

Even though it isn't as safe as others, this food torch burner has an adjustable gas flow control. The flame isn't precise, but it’s decent enough.

The gas release valve doesn't have an off button, and I found that a bit troubling. Another problem is the quality, which isn't as great. The trigger and the igniter stopped working or show lower performance after some usage.

For this cooking torch, you have to buy a special Iwatani butane, because that is the only gas that this culinary torch uses.

The maximum temperature of this torch is 2300 degrees Fahrenheit, which is not hot enough to make cooking efficient and fast.

I have found out that it can have gas leaks; it didn't happen to me, but most of my friends who have used it have complained about this particular problem.

Things I liked

  • Adjustable gas flow control

Things I didn't like

  • The weight
  • Too small
  • Temperature too low
  • Not efficient
  • Gas leaks
  • No guarantee
  • Using special Iwatani butane
  • No off button on the gas release valve
  • Quality
  • Not as safe as others
  • The price is too high

The dimensions of this torch are 8.2 x 6.1 x 1.4 inches, and it has portability and a solid removable base which makes it easy to use for things other than cooking. The color of this product is silver, and it is made of aluminum.

The weight of this kitchen torch is 9.4 ounces, which isn't too light, but also not as heavy as some torches can be.

The design is really comfortable and the device is easy to use, it really impressed me. This torch has a safety switch, which I find one of the most important advantages for this type of products.

Unlike the torches that you can find in Walmart, this one is precise, and you will be able to use it from any angle that you want to, without any complications. You can find this torch in any home depot store, or pretty much any other.

You will be able to adjust the size of the flame with this torch.

The temperature of the flame is 2500 degrees Fahrenheit, which I find disappointing considering all of the other great features that this torch has.

2500 degrees Fahrenheit is, as I said, the minimum that the torch should have, but that means that it should have even higher temperatures. Well, this one doesn't.

Things I liked

  • Portability
  • Removable base
  • The design
  • Safety switch
  • Precise
  • Adjustable flame size
  • Large gas tank
  • Self-ignition
  • High-quality ceramic tip
  • Available at most stores
  • Easily refillable
  • Comes with great instructions

Things I didn't like

  • The temperature

This torch comes with the medium sized frame (6.3 x 5 x 2.5 inches), and it is colored in silver and black. The material that it is made from is stainless steel.

The weight of this professional culinary torch is 4.8 ounces, which makes it the lightest of all the torches that you can find on this list.

You can adjust the size of the flame with the built-in turn knob, and it can burn up to 60 minutes, but the flame won't be as precise.

This torch has a child safety lock built-in. When you order it, you will receive an operating manual with it, which will make using so much easier.

One of the great features of this product is that it has a solid base, which will allow it to stand alone, and enable you to use it hands-free.

You will be surprised to hear that it is really easy to use, and the buttons are not difficult to push at all, and you can refill the butane on the bottom of the torch.

The maximum temperature of this product is 2500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Things I liked

  • Stainless steel
  • Really light
  • Built-in turn knob
  • It can burn up to 60 minutes
  • Child safety lock
  • Operating manual
  • Solid base
  • Very easy to use
  • Comes with instructions and cautions

Things I didn't like

  • The maximum temperature

The Kitchen Torch I Recommend

My journey to picking the best culinary torch was not easy. I have tried all sorts of torches and I've made all kinds of recipes that you can make with a blowtorch.

My family didn't really notice a big difference between things made from different torches, so I can only decide from the cook's perspective.

Even though every torch has its own pros and cons, the JB Chef Culinary Micro Butane Torch has definitely won me over.

This torch is incredibly easy to use, mostly because it is small, and it doesn't weigh much, which makes it totally comfortable for regular use.

And yes, the product did amaze me, but what definitely won me over was the customer service, which will always be there to help you. You won’t get disappointed spending money on this one.

So customer service won you over for the JB? Why did you need to contact?

I know nothing about these torches but have decided I want one and am researching.

    Hi dear,

I am so glad that you’ve decided to look into kitchen torches. You’ll see they can come in handy more often than you think.
However, let’s get something straight. It wasn’t just the fantastic customer service that won me over considering JB Chef’s Culinary Micro Butane Torch. I loved the whole list of incredible features it offers. Still, I have to admit, the company’s customer support was the last detail that helped me “seal the deal.”

I didn’t have any need to contact them as the product was functioning perfectly. In fact, they contacted me with some follow-up questions, just to check if I received the package, whether I am satisfied with my purchase and to encourage me to call them in case any problem appears.

A month later, on my recommendation, my friend Josie bought JB Chef Culinary Micro Butane Torch, too. Unfortunately, she obviously got a bad piece, as the lighter was not functioning properly. I was a bit surprised to hear that, as I talked to many people who use this exact model and no one ever had a problem. Fortunately, she contacted support immediately, and the issue was fixed in just a few days.

So, what I mean when I say their customer service is terrific is that they are forthcoming, fast and they’ll go to great lengths to make sure you are happy with their product.

Hope you’ll have much fun with your new kitchen torch.
